The first time I tried to meditate made me think I could never come to that space all practitioners were preaching about.
I searched for a safe, comfortable place and closed my eyes while listening to a guided meditation, and instead of drifting into a relaxed state, the opposite happened. It seemed like a million thoughts exploded simultaneously. Nothing made sense; I was suddenly hungry, sad, mad, and more anxious than before.
Years later, during my yoga teacher training, I learned that it is normal to have many thoughts; the secret to not getting absorbed by those is to observe without attachment. Learning about acceptance has an essential impact as well.
Four benefits I experienced from meditation:
Stress reduction and resilience by activating the relaxation response in my body. Science says this response can help lower blood pressure, slow breathing, and reduce muscle tension.
Raised Self-Awareness: I became more aware of my thoughts and feelings, which helped me identify the root causes of my anxiety, panic attacks, and overthinking.
Improved my ability to focus more and be present at the moment, which helped me reduce my worry and anxiety about the future.
Emotional regulation. Through a regular check-in, I learned to observe my emotions without judging them. While doing so helped me develop a more balanced, positive outlook on life.
After 12 years of practice, I acknowledge meditation as a valuable tool for raising awareness, becoming self-confident and improving stress resilience. It is an excellent place to start when you feel disconnected.
Do you meditate? If yes, how did it help you? If not, what has stopped you until now from meditating? Let me know in the comments :)
